Sir Edward Garnier, MP for Harborough, Oadby and Wigston, has welcomed the fall in the number of JSA claimants in his constituency for March. The number of unemployed claimants was 921. This represents a rate of 1.8% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 533rd highest of the 650 UK constituencies. (1st =highest rate of unemployment, 650th =lowest rate of unemployment). The number of claimants is 412 lower than in March 2013 and 28 lower than in February 2014.
Sir Edward said, “It is clearly good news that there has been a decrease in the number of JSA claimants for March. It is even better news that there has been such a dramatic reduction in comparison to the same period last year. Taking into account the news of yesterday’s lower inflation rate, there is growing evidence that the Government’s economic plan is working and that things are on the up. Last week the International Monetary Fund predicted that the British economy will be the fastest-growing economy in the G7 this year; it appears that the reduction in the number of unemployed in Harborough for March supports this positive forecast locally. We now have a record number of jobs in Britain but we should not be complacent. There is still work to be done to reduce the national debt and the deficit and to build a resilient economy for the long term.”
