Sir Edward Garnier QC MP, the MP for Harborough, Oadby and Wigston is pleased to learn of the award from the Reaching Communities programme of £116,056 to a project in Wigston as part of the Big Lottery Fund. The Boulter Crescent Community Flat is a year-long pilot project, aimed at supporting the most vulnerable and hard to reach residents of Boulter Crescent.
The residents of Boulter Crescent will have a “community inclusion worker” based in one of the flats thanks to this money. The flat will be refurbished to make it a ‘community flat’, where various agencies including the Police, Voluntary Action Leicester, Leicestershire Adult Learning Services, Community Safety Partnership, Community Action Partnership and Women’s Aid can meet residents in an informal setting. Services and activities such as basic computing, counselling, drug and alcohol sessions and children’s health checks via an NHS nurse will be offered to residents, who include single parents, men who used to be homeless, people affected by drug and alcohol misuse and people with mental health issues.
Sir Edward today expressed his support for the project: ‘I am sure the residents of Boulter Crescent will benefit greatly from the community flat, a direct result of the grant obtained through the Big Lottery Fund. It will give them the opportunity to speak to professionals about their problems without any fear and in private. I commend the work of the Big Lottery Project and the way it enables projects like this to change peoples’ lives.”
