Harborough MP and Solicitor General, Edward Garnier, was the guest speaker at the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce’s lunch time meeting at the Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough, on Friday, 17 February. Invited by Chairman Mike Moore the MP spoke about his work as a Government Law Officer which involves advising the Government on matters of law, superintending the Crown Prosecution Service and the Serious Fraud Office as well as being accountable to Parliament for the work of the entire Government Legal Service headed up by the Treasury Solicitor. The Law Officers (the Attorney and Solicitor Generals) also are the guardians of the public interest and the rule of law, non-political functions that ensure that the Government is not above the law and that the administration of justice is protected from improper interference by contempt of court. After lunch Edward Garnier took questions on a wide range of subjects affecting the business people present including taxation, red tape, freedom of the press and the country’s relationships with the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights.
