Last Friday, 11 January, Sir Edward Garnier, the MP for Harborough, Oadby and Wigston, visited the HITBag (Harborough Improvement Team) “Morsbags pod” in the market hall in Market Harborough where he was presented with the Harborough HITBags’ 3000th Morsbag.
“Morsbags” was set up by Claire Morsman in January 2007 to provide a viable alternative to the vast number of plastic shopping bags which are used for a few minutes and then thrown away ending up in landfill sites. Pods of people gather together to make the bags from recycled fabric and the finished “Morsbags” are then distributed amongst the local community. As of last October 2012 as many as 113,000 Morsbags had been made throughout the country. HITBags are supported by the Harborough Improvement Team and Sir Edward met Claire Glover and Mary Danks, representatives of the local pod, who gave him the 3000th bag made by their pod.
Speaking afterwards Sir Edward said “I was delighted to meet the HITBags’ presentation team. We should all recycle as much as possible and the idea of making reusable bags to avoid non- biodegradable plastic bags ending up in landfill sites is an excellent idea. HITBags have been making recycled shopping bags for almost 3 years – I was given one at a fete in Great Bowden by Claire and Mary some time ago - and I hope that we will see more and more people taking them to the shops with them.”
