Edward Garnier QC MP is to chair a public meeting for residents to air their concerns about Oadby and Wigston Borough Council’s Town Centre “Masterplan”. The Masterplan includes controversial plans to develop East St and Sandhurst Street car parks.
There is a growing feeling of discontent amongst residents over the plans, particularly given that a large number of residents are only just finding out about these plans a short while before the Council’s consultation ends on August 22nd. The meeting is being held to give residents and local businesses an open forum in which to find out more about the plans and have their say.
The meeting will be at St. Peter’s Church Hall, Oadby, on Friday 3rd August 2012 at 7.30pm.
Edward Garnier said:
“Since a good many residents and local business people have only just become aware of the Council’s proposals with regard to these two car parks I thought it right to call a public meeting so that we could all find out more about what is going on. I am afraid the meeting has been called at very short notice but I hope that as many people who can make it will come along to share their thoughts.”
Woodlands Ward Councillor, Bhupen Dave said:
“The Lib Dems and the Council have publicised these plans poorly – virtually none of the residents in my ward has heard about the plans and has no idea of the impact on Oadby that these plans will have. We hope that if the Council actually listens to what people want, not what their consultants assume we want based on theoretical, academic models, they will reconsider these plans.”
“The plans will make it very difficult to park in Oadby and may well result in small businesses having to close.”
“In short, the Masterplan will be a master-disaster for Oadby.”
Grange Ward Councillor, Rav Thakor said:
“The Lib Dems love stuffing leaflets through our letterboxes, but not one has mentioned the Masterplan. They are clearly trying to keep it as quiet as possible.”
